Posted Wednesday April 1, 2020

In 2005, Pat and Patty Schmelzle and family established the Kathy L. Schmelzle Scholarship with the Nemaha County STEP Foundation, in memory of their daughter. The Kathy L. Schmelzle Academic Scholarship for $500 is awarded to a graduating senior from Nemaha Central High School who plans to enter a degree program with a major in teacher education.

The 2019 recipient of this scholarship is Taylor Korte daughter of David and Stacie Korte. From babysitting to volunteering as a teacher's assistant at Vacation Bible School, Korte has been able to build relationships with many children. Along with volunteering at a daycare, Korte participated in several extracurricular activities during high school such as KAY (publicity director), NHS, FCCLA, SADD, volleyball, cheerleading, softball, track, basketball, and band. As well as being extremely active in high school, she also plays piano, teaches piano lessons, is a Kindergarten Teacher's Aide, serves in several volunteer roles in the community, and has been extremely active in St. Bede's Church.

She plans on majoring in Elementary Education at Emporia State University this fall.
